Sapphire is the traditional birthstone for the month of September.
Sapphire is the blue variety of Corundum. Traditionally it has symbolized nobility, truth, sincerity, and faithfulness. Its extraordinary color has set the standard for which all other blue gems are measured. The birthstone for September has been associated with royalty and romance, reinforced in 1981 when Britain's Prince Charles gave a Blue Sapphire engagement ring to Lady Diana Spencer. The most desirable shade of blue Sapphire is "cornflower" it's neither light nor dark with a silky sheen.
